How do caravan water gauges work?

A sender probe (sold separately) features a series of sensors along the bar, which measures your tank’s current capacity and feeds this data to the water tank gauge’s control panel for you to read at any time. 

Should you keep caravan water tanks full?

Keeping your water tanks full is crucial while you're on the road. You never know when you could find yourself stuck by the side of the road due to a breakdown, and a ready water supply is critical. 

However, this doesn't mean it should be full year-round. If you’re between trips and are storing your caravan, we recommend keeping your tank clean with a tank cleaner product similar to Camec Tank Cleen. Using a tank cleaning product is essential to prevent bacterial growth and ensure potable water is always available when you need it.

How do you install a water tank indicator on a caravan?

Installing caravan water tank gauges is easy. While every gauge carries its own instructions, the general steps involved are: 

1. Drain all water from your tank and select a spot to install closest to where the caravan water gauge will be fitted while checking the wire lead can reach the distance.
2. Mark a position to install a quarter of the way down from the top and at least 240mm in from the right-hand corner. Ensure you don’t position the sender probe on any bends or curves to maintain a tight seal.
3. Using a 22mm hole saw at a slow speed, drill a hole in the water tank and clean debris away. 
4. Insert the sender probe through the hole and secure the nut with your fingers and spanner without over-tightening. The self-sealing grommet should provide a watertight seal if installed correctly.
5. Flush all debris from the water tank and plug the wire into the back of the water tank level gauge.
6. Mounting the Gauge/Panel: With a 16mm hole saw, slowly drill a hole into the surface where you’ll install the water tank level indicator and feed the wiring loom up to the gauge and plug it into the back.
7. Attach the caravan water tank level indicator to the wall with the adhesive backing or mount if provided.
8. Fill your water tank and confirm the working order of your water tank gauge by pressing the test button. 
9. The reserve light will flash red when the water level falls below 25% capacity.
